I was finally fed up with making other company owners rich with my skills as a salesman and sales manager and decided it was time for me to make my own way. Is that the way you got into your business? Or, are you starting a new business for much the same reason? Why make someone else rich?
I first started a business doing mortgage and commercial lease auditing. We would audit variable interest rate mortgages for individuals and business and find significant errors in the treatment of interest changes and recover over payments for clients.
We also audited commercial leases for businesses that were renting office, retail or warehouse space. About 30% of the time we found they had been paying for floor space lease they didn't have or were over paying for non-authorized common area charges that were incorrectly billed. We would work with the landlords to get that money returned to our clients.

Later, I started and ran an invention marketing company in Houston, TX. One of our first and best known products was the Flatulence Filter Seat Cushion®.
Yes, it was what the name implies, a seat cushion invented by my Father-in-Law that when you sit on it and release smelly gas, it immediately filtered out the stink.
We guaranteed it would zap the odor out of smelly gas. It was also the perfect gift for the person in your life who had everything . . . including smelly gas.
Tough Marketing Challenges
Because of the marketing challenge for finding prospects who had a need for this type of product, I started a very successful free publicity campaign to get it known across the country.
As a result, we were able to attract over $151,000 in free newspaper advertising from articles that were written by columnist in just about ever major newspaper in the country.
We were getting as much as 40 column inch news stories written about us and the product for free. In fact, one year the celebrated columnist Dave Berry from the Miami Herald had the "TooT TrappeR" (as it was also known) on his 10 Best Christmas Gifts of the Year.
We also publicized and obtained over 650 radio station interviews all over the U.S., Australia, Canada and England.

This is just one of the strategies I teach. But first let me tell you what has happened in those first 5 years in New Mexico.
In 2000, I moved a new company we started, SantaFeDecor.com to Albuquerque and began investing in several other small businesses. Now I own a residential real estate investment company, a commercial real estate investment company, Direct Marketing Strategies Rx LLC and part interest in a mobile advertising company.
