From Poor Working Class Family
To Business Entrepreneur
It wasn't always that way. Wayne grew up in a low income working class family in Texas.
He tells the story of remembering several years as a kid going out to the oil fields of West Texas to hunt rabbits and fishing on the tanks (West Texas talk for ponds) and working hard in his family's half acre garden behind their rent house to afford to keep food on the table.
He says, "My dad tried hard but he just didn't have the skills to demand a good living in the marketplace. I don't come to the table with any natural skills or silver spoon background. However, I did make a decision that I was not going to live that life as an adult."
Mediocre Student Turns It Around
After graduating from high school as a mediocre student, he got a job and started going to the University at night.
He was such a mediocre high school student that his class ranking made him the exact middle (the dead center) of his graduating class.
The person above him was in the top half, the person below on the scale was in the bottom half. Everyone told him, "go out and learn a good trade and you'll be alright."
"There's nothing wrong with having a trade, but I didn't enjoy working out in the sun all day," he tells friends.
And he couldn't see how that would break the cycle of living to just get by.

It took 9 years at night, working 40-50 a week during the day,
but he became the first person in his family on either side to
ever graduate from college.
With an Industrial Marketing Degree under my belt, he went to work for a Fortune 100 company selling technology products to Fortune 500 companies.

Wayne often tells the story, "Over and over one of my mentors, Dan Kennedy had been beating me over the head to increase my prices. 'People will pay more for your product than you think if you give them a valid reason to do so,' he’d tell me."
"Okay, Okay, I’ll Try It . . . . But It Won’t Work"
Boy was Wayne wrong. On the website, we sold regular old everyday bedding, bath and kitchen home fashions. You know things like comforter ensembles, sheets, towels, bathroom accessories, and wall decorations for a niche market in Southwest and Western designs.
A pretty basic business, right? They were, doing ONE thing right (according to Kennedy), Wayne was targeting a small niche of buyers.
However, everyone in his industry told him; set your price at “Keystone.” That means he was supposed to mark-up his products 100% over our wholesale cost.
If he buys a product for $10 it should be priced at $20. Kennedy calls that, “a whole industry standing in a circle looking inward.” Are they doing that in your industry? That's progress through circular motion and IS NOT a smart strategy.
But guess what? Wayne's company was one of the few, on the Internet in this niche, that actually stocked product, shipped it the next day and had every design available on the website.
His website also had the most design choices on the Internet. Wayne even had design experts that the customer could actually reach on the telephone. (What an Internet concept – people you can actually talk to.)

According to Kennedy, Wayne could use that as a reason for his prospects to buy from him at an even higher price. So he repositioned his websites and raised the prices 25% or more.
All of the manufacturers and others in the industry told him he would fail. Guess what! He did lose 10% of his customers but, his profits went up over 109%. And can you believe what happened next.
Just about all of his direct competitors on the Web raised their prices too. They were all about the same price again. So, he raised his prices even more. Wayne always says, "You don’t want to follow the herd. You want to lead it!"
